AFSCME Rejects UC’s Proposed Contract Extension

AFSCME Rejects UC’s Proposed Contract Extension

UC IS SERIOUS ABOUT BARGAINING: The contract with AFSCME for patient care technical workers expired on September 30, 2007. UC is committed to reaching an agreement with AFSCME. In addition to offering AFSCME 18 different dates in October for bargaining and 19 dates in November, the University also proposed extending the contract to allow additional time to bargain. Unfortunately, AFSCME refused to extend the contract and as of bargaining on Thursday, September 27, has only agreed to two single bargaining sessions over the next four weeks. The only way we can reach an agreement on wages, benefits and other important issues in the contract is to engage in respectful discourse at the bargaining table. UC is working hard to that end.

HEALTH BENEFITS: During bargaining sessions in September, representatives from UC’s HR/Benefits department presented AFSCME with updated information on 2008 medical plans. The university has proposed that patient care techs pay only the same premiums next year as other employees and no more. Although employees in some plans will be asked to pay slightly more next year, in other cases, employees’ costs will decrease. These new costs for healthcare plans, including reductions in costs for some employees, cannot be implemented for PCTs without the agreement of the union.

BARGAINING DATES SCHEDULED IN OCTOBER: October 16, October 25
