August 14 Bargaining Highlights

UC COMMITTED TO BARGAINING WITH PCT UNIT EMPLOYEES: UC met with AFSCME in San Diego on August 14th to continue negotiations over a new contract for the university's patient care technical (PCT) employees. The current contract is due to expire on September 30, 2007. At Tuesday's meeting, AFSCME began to describe their initial demands for patient care technical (PCT) employees. AFSCME included in their documents demands not only for the patient care technical employees but also for service unit employees who are not due to begin bargaining for a new contract with the university until October 2007. The University bargaining team reminded AFSCME that their demands/proposals for the service unit were not a part of the current negotiations, which are solely for the purpose of reaching a contract for the more than 11,000 patient care technical employees who work in UC's medical and health care facilities. Patient care employees play a crucial role in providing the high quality health care services university medical centers are known for, and they are not only a separate bargaining unit under the law but they have also traditionally bargained separately over their terms and conditions of employment. In addition to an outline of initial demands, AFSCME presented UC with an information request, which the university will begin work on immediately.

NEXT BARGAINING DATES: UC and AFSCME will meet again in San Francisco on August 29th and 30th to continue negotiations for the PCT unit.
